Time Travel Television Top Ten

Matt Smith as the new Doctor.

“People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect. But actually, from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint, it’s more like a big ball of wibbly-wobbly… timey-wimey… stuff.” – David Tennant, Doctor Who (2007)

For generations, time travel has engaged science fiction writers and led to some great books, film and television. Since my youth, I have been fascinated by time travel, and I make a point to see nearly every television show and movie that deals with the subject.

Almost every science fiction or fantasy series, from Star Trek to Charmed to Lost, has dabbled in time travel for an episode or two. But my favorite shows are those that deal with time travel itself, where every week characters are flung through time to deal with a new crisis.

To commemorate the latest season of Doctor Who, premiering on BBC America on Saturday, April 17th, I’ve come up with a list of my favorites.

Images from Smallville’s “Escape”

Which DC Comics’ character is going to interrupt a romantic getaway for Lois and Clark on the next episode of Smallville? It’s the Silver Banshee! And that’s nothing compared to the surprise waiting for those two when they bump into Chloe and Oliver at the bed & breakfast. Chloe and Oliver? What?! Here’s what awaits our heroes in “Escape” (description courtesy of the CW):

Clark (Tom Welling) and Lois (Erica Durance) head out of town for a quiet romantic getaway, but their plans are thwarted when they run into Chloe (Allison Mack) and Oliver (Justin Hartley) at their Bed & Breakfast Inn. The couples’ awkward moment is interrupted by the arrival of the Silver Banshee (guest star Odessa Rae), who sets her sights on Clark and Oliver. Meanwhile, Tess (Cassidy Freeman) faces off with Zod (Callum Blue) with a surprising result. Kevin Fair directed the episode written by Genevieve Sparling.

Smallville’s next episode, “Escape.” airs on Friday, April 2 at 8pm EST.

Images and clip from Supernatural’s “Dead Men…”

Supernatural returns with an all-new episode this week, and we’re celebrating with some great new pics and a cool clip. In this week’s episode, titled “Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid.” Here’s how the CW describes the episode:

Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) investigate Bobby’s home town where the dead are rising from the grave but instead of attacking humans, they are happily reuniting with their families. The brothers turn to Bobby (Jim Beaver) for help but he tells them not to worry about it and to leave town. Suspicious, Dean investigates and comes face to face with Bobby’s dead wife (guest star Carrie Anne Fleming) who has no memory of what happened to her. Once the zombies start turning evil, the boys tell Bobby he has to kill his wife but he refuses.

It airs Thursday 9/8 p.m. ET/CT on the CW.

Restored Metropolis poster

Metropolis

Courtesy of Kino International

Last week, the good folks over at Kino International gave us a peek of the new poster for the restored version of Fritz Lang’s Metropolis. As we reported previously, this classic silent film has been restored with 25 minutes of footage that was previously believed to be lost. The film debuted at the Berlin Film Festival in February, to great reviews.

While details of any upcoming U.S. theatrical release of this restored classic are still unknown, it’s heartening to see the poster. You can also follow Kino’s Metropolis on Twitter.

Review: Massacrator

massacrator-poster-enIt’s important to remember, when reviewing short films, that not every filmmaker is attempting to create a work of art. While most filmmakers want to focus on character or story (or even special effects), some filmmakers seem to be telling a joke to their friends. Often, this inside joke has a strange (even ludicrous) setup and an off-the-wall punchline. Welcome to Massacrator.

This odd short film by director Pierre Ayotte doesn’t tell a story so much as it tells a joke. The joke goes like this: “Imagine if, instead of having Sarah Conner fight Arnold Schwarzenegger’s cyborg killing machine in The Terminator, she had enlisted the help of Elvis.”

The story doesn’t tried to hide it’s obvious rip-off – I mean, homage – to The Terminator franchise. When Jean-Pierre Flayeux appears as the Massacrator, it’s a straight take from Terminator 2: Judgment Day, including beating up a biker and stealing his clothes and motorcycle.

The girl (Daniella Jovanovic) is first seen exercising – a routine (and costume) taken from T2, as well. Then, just when one might begin to wonder if the director is just reshooting James Cameron’s script, it finally takes a turn and introduces Matt Monastesse as Elvis. A brief battle begins, and ends… well, I won’t spoil the fun.

Does it work? That depends on what you’re expecting out of the film. Hey, this kind of off-beat storytelling worked for Bubba Ho-Tep. But what made that horror comedy work (in part) was an amazing performance by Bruce Campbell. Massacrator has four minutes and no dialogue to make us believe that some version (is it a ghost? a time traveler?) of Elvis is here to save the day. It’s a hard sell.

Massacrator isn’t really a story. It’s a punch-out set to music. But if that’s what you want to see, you’re likely to find it amusing.
