The FilmGuru's Biography
Kevin
Wohler (a.k.a.
The FilmGuru) has been an avid moviegoer since the mid 1980s. In addition to
seeing numerous films (over 1000 in the last 20 years), he also takes time
to study the film process and the artists who write and direct them.
For years, people have asked me to name my favorite movie. My standard response was always to give my top three: The Godfather, Casablanca, and Star Wars. Nowadays, I think that's a bit of a cheat. While all of these are great films for one reason or another, I don't think any of them really speaks to who I am or what I believe makes the perfect film. I don't know if I've ever seen a perfect film, although The Lord of the Rings trilogy is pretty damned close.
For the record, my favorite film is probably Unbreakable by M. Night Shyamalan. Not only is it a comic book origin story brought to life, it is a beautifully filmed movie. I think the use of a green rain poncho on the hero was brilliant. The poncho becomes a cape and cowl in the final fight scene, giving David Dunn the look and feel of the mystery heroes of the 1940s.
In addition, I greatly identify with the film because it is about understanding one's fate. Like Samuel L. Jackson's character Elijah Price (a.k.a. "Mr. Glass"), I was born with osteogenesis imperfecta -- a brittle bone disease. I have often dreamed that I had been born unbreakable instead. David is on a quest to understand his nature, but in the end the audience learns that it was actually a voyage of self-discovery for "Mr. Glass," as well. As he says in the end of the film, "Now that we know who you are, I know who I am."
When not in a darkened theater, I enjoy spending time with my lovely wife Rachel. We do everything together, including our weekend ritual of reading comic books over morning coffee. I love to read (mostly science fiction and fantasy), write (movie reviews and short stories), and play video games. I also collect comic books -- an impressive collection that grows exponentially every year.
