11:59

11:59

One of the more provocative films that I saw at the Kansas International Film Festival was the new film from first-time director Jamin Winans called 11:59. With an intriguing story of reality and media's ability to manipulate that reality, the film becomes part mystery and part conspiracy. Unfortunately, the film also combines a bit of time travel and spirituality, making the ultimate focus of the film a bit murky. more...

Acne

Some films defy classification. With the film Acne by writer and director Rusty Nails, even words like horror, sci-fi, comedy, spoof, and satire don't seem to adequately cover it. This film is certainly all of these things, but with its apparent agenda to lampoon authority, it may also be a rallying cry for disaffected teens. more...

EMR

In an age of information, it is perhaps the height of terror to lose one's memory. For Adam Jones, the problem is more than just forgetfulness. It is a loss of self. In the new psychological thriller, EMR, first time film directors James Erskine and Danny McCullough take audiences on a personal journey through conspiracy, paranoia, the Internet, and one man's struggle to discover why he is losing his mind. more...

Face

The battle between generations is amplified when the gap also represents different cultures. In Face, the new film by director Bertha Bay-Sa Pan, the conflict of multiple generations is represented by a single household and the three women living there. Bai Ling plays Kim Liu, a young woman in 1977 New York who finds herself at odds between the traditional Chinese culture that her family represents and her own desires for a more modern life. more...

Limbo

Limbo

In the independent film Limbo, director Thomas Ikimi takes a look at what the afterlife holds for those who don't make it to either heaven or hell. Is the afterlife merely an endless void, or is it an endless loop? For Adam Moses (Christopher Russo), a man betrayed and killed because of his work against a crime lord, the last hour of his life becomes the focus -- and the trap -- of his existence. more...

Sunnyvale (Opie Gets Laid)

Sunnyvale (Opie Gets Laid)

The independent films that one sees at a film festival can be as inspired as others are awful. There are three things that most independent films have in common: low budget, low production values, and mediocre acting. While many independent films struggle with drama, some take a different approach and examine things from a comedic point of view. This is the case with Sunnyvale, the story of a loser who suddenly finds himself juggling three women. more...
