The Top 10 of 1998

There were a number of good movies in 1998. Out of the 68 movies I saw this past year, the average movie rated a 6.6 on my scale of 1 to 10. This may sound skewed, but you have to remember that (unlike the pros) I pick which movies I want to see and which I don't. As a result, I avoid a number of bad movies and tend to see those that appeal to my personal taste. (That's why you always get science fiction reviews from me on opening weekend!) :)

Before I list my top ten favorites for 1998, I'd like to point out that there are a number of critically acclaimed movies, art flicks mostly, that I didn't get a chance to see. Topeka doesn't have an art house (this town is culturally void) so I have to travel to Kansas City when I'm in the mood for something highbrow. If you see an art flick reviewed by me, you can bet I was in KC that weekend.

Also, this list is not just a list of the highest ranked movies of this past year. A number of the movies I ranked with a nine, upon reflection, weren't worthy of it. And there were two or three movies that I ranked even lower that turned out to be my favorites for the year. Go figure.

Without any further ado, here is my list of top picks for 1998. You can read the corresponding review by clicking on any title.
