MIB Returns
for More Box Office Success

While nothing is harder to duplicate than success, the folks at Amblin Entertainment knew they had a golden goose when Men in Black hit the screen in 1997. A smash hit then, it was only a matter of time before agents J and K returned to the theaters.

Will Smith returns as Agent J, the rookie agent who joined the MIB in the last film. Having "neuralyzed" his partner at the end of the last film, J has been unable to find a steady replacement. Immersing himself in his work, J has become a workaholic and likes to think he is running the show.

Luckily for J, a new threat has arrived on Earth that is more than the MIB can handle. For this one, they will need the resources of their greatest agent, who J willingly zapped into retirement. Enter K (Tommy Lee Jones), the reluctant agent without a clue of who he is or what he does.

MIB does what no sequel has ever successfully done before. It has created two "rookie in training" storylines while merely reversing the roles from the previous film. Of course, all the old jokes that were funny the first time are ironic now. When J tells K that it is time to put "it" on, he explains that "it" is "the last suit you'll ever wear... again."

The wonderful assortment of odd alien creatures and ultra-sleek sci-fi gadgets are merely eye candy for a very funny movie. Added to the mix are some wonderful performance by Lara Flynn Boyle as the evil Serleena and Patrick Warburton as Agent T. Keep watch for a guest appearance by a big music star, too.

Director Barry Sonnenfeld has honed the pacing of the film to be quick without seeming rushed. For a comedy, timing is everything. At a sleek 87 minutes, one is left wanting more but not feeling cheated. I guess we'll have to hope there'll be another sequel.

MY RATING: 7 out of 10.

RATED: PG-13
RUN TIME: 87 min.
