Christopher Brennan Offers Fast Food Psychology
Do You Want Freud With That?

Sometimes it's difficult to be the smart kid in school. But Christopher Brennan (Evan Lee Dahl) understands the complex problems and desires facing his fellow teens and offers them advice in an unconventional manner. In Jesse Dykstra's short film Christopher Brennan Saves the World, the local burger joint doubles as a drive thru for psychoanalysis.

While Christopher takes orders for burgers and fries, he also doles out advice on everything from college choices to picking up women. It appears he's something of a local legend, and cars line up to get a dose of his sage wisdom. The comedy comes not only from the wide range of subjects that Christopher is willing to tackle, but also from the colorful characters who come to him for help.

Behind the comedy, however, there's also a love story. Christopher has a weakness for Julie Parker (Jamie Amaral). She's the epitome of unattainable perfection, that girl that every dork in high school wants but who is way out of his league. Talking to her -- even in a clinical fashion -- is a treat for Christopher, and he uses her request for advice as a chance to talk with her one-on-one. Unfortunately, he soon has competition from one of his other "clients."

This short film does a wonderful job of setting up the situation quickly and giving audiences a connection with Christopher. He's a nice, neat, likeable guy, but it's immediately obvious that he's not the kind of guy who has a lot of friends. He knows people, he may even have a certain amount of respect (like the kid who always tutors others in trigonometry), but he's too smart to really fit in.

Christopher Brennan Saves the World is an enjoyable comedy short. The story is tight, but moves at a reasonable pace -- unlike some amateur short films that seem to be rushing through the story. The actors are for the most part unknown, although Dahl and Seeley have done their share of television cameos. Dahl shines, however. His performance is important to the film, but his supporting cast should not be discounted. They all contribute to this outstanding short.

With top of the line production values, Christopher Brennan Saves the World looks like something from a major studio, not an indie. It's a shame that short films like this often go unnoticed by the mainstream film-going community.
