Nothing Wrong with a Little Cyn
Short Film Shows Lots of Style

How do you make a film in six days that can't be more than three minutes in length? This is the challenge that filmmakers in FOX's reality show On the Lot were asked to perform. For director Alex Ferarri, the outcome is a powerful short film called Cyn.

In a recent interview with the director, Ferarri noted that his short film Cyn is a trimmed-down version of a script for his feature film Red Princess Blues (yet to be filmed).

He said, "When I made the Top 100 of Steven Spielberg's On the Lot and they asked me to create a short film in six days, Cyn was born. Done for under $1000, Cyn brings together an amazing group of talented people. Without these remarkably talented friends and professionals, Cyn would have never made its six day schedule."

As with Ferarri's short feature BROKEN, Cyn revolves around a girl in trouble. The audience doesn't know who she is or why she's seemingly a prisoner. Things, however, are not as they appear.

I have to give it to Ferarri. In five brief minutes he puts forward a film that perfectly showcases his style as a director. The film is dark, violent, and edgy, but also has a touch of humor that is so often missing from young directors taking themselves too seriously.

Ferarri didn't break out of the top 100 of On the Lot, but he made an amazing short film with a lot of punch. He pushes the line, making a film with more style than substance... but what little story there is makes us beg for more. Having watched the reality series, I imagine that the lack of plot is what held back Ferarri from advancing to the next level. Regardless, I think it's an amazing feat, and -- hopefully -- a promise of more to come.
